about

The resonance of Drew Mulholland working with Joe Meek's original gear is spine-tingling..

'Joe Meek's Ampex PR10' features recording sessions conducted and manipulated by Drew Mulholland, using Joe Meek's original studio AMPEX PR10 reel to reel tape recorder.

Meek's story is the stuff of legend. A pioneer of experimental pop music during the 1960's, his innovative approach was to make him one of the most influential sound engineers of all time. Working from his Holloway Road home/studio in London, Meek developed a range of recording techniques that have become common practice to this day. Overdubbing, sampling and reverberation were all utilised to create new forms of studio-based, space age pop music.

Meek's personal life also pushed boundaries. Suffering bouts of mental illness, habitual recreational drug use, plus an ongoing necessity to shield his homosexuality (illegal at the time), it is perhaps not surprising he became well known for chaotic episodes. Indeed, the Ampex PR10 bears some scars from this time, and still has a dent in one corner, where it was apparently thrown at the drummer of The Tornados, Clem Cattini.

Meek became increasingly preoccupied with attempts to communicate with the dead, including setting up tape machines in graveyards for this purpose, as well as reportedly conversing with the deceased Buddy Holly in his dreams.

Tragically, in 1967 Meek ended his own life after shooting his landlady, and then turning the shotgun on himself.

With seminal work as cult band Mount Vernon Arts Club; a lecturer/composer in residence at Glasgow University; and a prolific producer of experimental, counter-cultural soundtracks; Drew Mulholland is widely acclaimed for his creative and academic contribution to the nebulous fields of hauntology and psychogeography.
