about

A Trip To Hob Moor

There is a moor within the city of York, but it wasn’t until I heard its name that I determined to spend an afternoon recording alone... on Hob Moor.

An ancient common land, the moor is home to many species of wildflower, grasses, Harebell and Common Sorrel, English Elm and Hazel too alongside Meadow Pipits, Skylarks, Rooks and Merlins.

However, in 2019 a new visitor was discovered... a species of plasmodal slime was found to have the ability to successfully negotiate experimental mazes. Saprophytic by nature, plasmodic mould feeds on decaying organic material like wet bark or leaves.

Unlike most moulds which spore and then grow ON a food source, this has the ability to MOVE TOWARDS the food.

First appearing during the Proterozoic aeon approximately 2.5 billion years ago

Cambridge Drifts

A few years ago I was invited to give a couple of talks on Psychogeography and Hauntology and their influence on my work at Cambridge.

Over three days I made hours of field recordings just wandering around between Girton (Delia’s alma mater), Trinity (Arthur Eddington, Aleister Crowley), George Mallory (Magdalene), Corpus Christi (where I lodged), the Botanic Gardens, along the banks of the Cam, Lady Mitchell Hall (Yoko & John gig 1969), and Syd Barrett’s old place on Hills Road.

Before I caught the train home I went through the Market Square (scene of Syd’s final gig) and bought two pieces of Magnetite from a stall.

Magnetite was used by Austrian engineer Fritz Pfleumer who after experimenting with various materials used cigarette paper coated with Magnetite powder to invent the first magnetic tape in 1928.

All recordings made on magnetic tape.
